The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after a Chelsea’s fan invaded the pitch and confronted Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The incident happened during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup quarter-final win on Tuesday (19). It was after Mykhailo Mudryk had equalized for Chelsea in added time at the end of 90 minutes.

The man emerged from the home section, ran to the pitch and approached Dubravka, pushing him and celebrating in his face. The goalkeeper didn’t react to the situation, and the man ran back to the stands.
After the game, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe talked about the subject. “I have always said that the safety of players, coaches, managers, referees, linesmen that’s the priority in any football match. So more has to be done to keep especially irate supporters away from the pitch”. said Howe.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “We need to be careful. The fans need to be careful with this type of thing because it’s a thing that can put in danger the players. I’m disappointed. I don’t agree with this type of thing that happened here in Stamford Bridge and in other stadiums in England or around the world. It’s always disappointing with this type of thing because it’s dangerous”.
Both the Metropolitan Police and Chelsea are looking into the matter. No arrests have yet been made, but sanctions could follow if the pitch invader is identified.
