The Beatles released their last new track on Thursday (2), with John Lennon’s vocals rescued from a demo tape. During the recording process, which involved the remaining members of the iconic band, Fab Four bassist Paul McCartney described the experience as almost spiritual.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, McCartney shared what it was like working on the project and turning Lennon’s sketches into a full track. Together with Ringo Starr, the drummer, and the help of new artificial intelligence technologies to improve the audio, they finalized the composition.

“When we were in the studio, we would hear John’s voice in our headphones. I could almost imagine that he was in the next room, in a recording booth or something, and that we were working together again,” McCartney shared about the moment he described as “full of joy”.
“It was truly delightful, you know. We hadn’t experienced anything like that for a long time, obviously, and suddenly we were collaborating with our old Johnny,” he added, using an affectionate nickname for his colleague, who was tragically murdered in 1980. George Harrison, who passed away in 2001, and Ringo Starr had already tried to work on the demo left by Lennon in the 1990s. However, the tape recorded in the musician’s apartment in New York lacked quality, and the tools of the time were not capable of improving your voice. McCartney described the process as magical and deeply meaningful.
