Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made headlines not only for his diplomatic efforts but also for his wardrobe during a high-profile meeting with former US President Donald Trump at the White House in September. Departing from his signature military attire, which he had worn during a tense February visit, Zelensky arrived in a black business suit and shirt—his first such appearance since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022.
The sartorial change was widely noted. In February, Trump had jokingly questioned whether Zelensky even owned a suit, and right-wing journalist Brian Glenn had publicly criticised his military look. This time, Glenn was quick to compliment the Ukrainian leader, prompting a light-hearted exchange that included Trump and drew laughter from the room. Zelensky quipped, “I changed, you didn’t,” highlighting a more relaxed and constructive atmosphere compared to the previous meeting.
Sources revealed that the White House had inquired in advance whether Zelensky would wear a suit, viewing it as a potential symbol of diplomatic progress. A Trump adviser even joked that the change in dress could signal a move toward peace, though no tie was expected.
The September meeting was markedly more cordial than the previous one, which had been fraught with tension and near confrontation. Trump’s advisers noted that Zelensky had adjusted his approach, avoiding emotionally charged tactics such as displaying images of war casualties. Instead, the Ukrainian president focused on diplomacy and forward-looking dialogue.
Following the meeting, Zelensky described the talks as “very good” and extended a formal invitation to Trump to participate in future peace negotiations, potentially involving Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump has previously expressed interest in such a role.
Zelensky also planned to speak with Putin later that day, following a broader summit with European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Key issues on the agenda included potential territorial compromises and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump indicated that US troop deployment to Ukraine remained a possibility under certain conditions, suggesting a willingness to explore various security arrangements.
Overall, the visit marked a symbolic and strategic shift for Zelensky, combining diplomatic finesse with a new image—both aimed at fostering progress in the ongoing conflict and peace efforts.
