Aston Martin will not appeal penalty given to Fernando Alonso

Date:

This Tuesday (26), Aston Martin revealed that they will not appeal the penalty Fernando Alonso received at the Australian Grand Prix.

Alonso was handed a 20-second penalty for “potentially dangerous” driving. He braked too early at turn 6, on the penultimate lap, and Mercedes driver George Russell, who was following close behind, crashed. Russell’s car came to a stop in the middle of the track.

With the penalty, Alonso dropped from sixth to eighth place in the standings. Aston Martin boss Mike Krack said in a statement that the team had to “accept the decision”. “I want you to know that we fully support Fernando”, he started the message.

“To receive a 20-second time penalty when there was no contact with the following car has been a bitter pill to swallow, but we have to accept the decision”, added Krack. He also said that Alonso had been “using every tool in his toolbox” to finish ahead of Russel, but he would “never put anyone in harm’s way”.
