Biden promises to visit Angola and highlights the importance of the partnership between the two countries

Date:

President Joe Biden highlighted on Thursday (30) the importance and impact of the partnership between Angola and the United States during a meeting with his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, and promised to visit the African country.

“We find ourselves at a historic moment,” Biden told Lourenço, at the beginning of a meeting between the two at the White House.

“The partnership between Angola and the United States is more important than ever”, noted the North American President in the Oval Office.

Asked by a journalist if he would visit Angola, Biden replied: “I’ve been there and I’ll be back.”

It is worth remembering that the American head of state promised to visit Africa this year, when he received the leaders of the African continent last December, but the White House has repeatedly refused to say when Biden would make the trip and there is no indication that it will happen before 2024.

Joe Biden thanked João Lourenço for his “work for peace” in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a region shaken for decades by conflicts, and in particular by the rebellion of the armed group M23.

In turn, the Angolan head of state considered that Joe Biden was the first North American President to “change the paradigm of cooperation between the United States and the African continent”.

“We are open to cooperating with the United States of America in all domains, including economy, defense and security, transport and energy, telecommunications, agriculture, space exploration for peaceful purposes and other domains that were in the interests” of both countries, stated the Angolan leader.

As a result, the meeting between Biden and Lourenço lasted less than an hour and, at the end, in a brief statement to the press covering the meeting, the Angolan head of state said there was a “total opening on the part of the United States Government” and that Angola will benefit from this.
