US President Joe Biden stated, on Tuesday (14), that the United States does not intend to distance itself from China, but rather to improve its relationship, before a summit with his counterpart Xi Jinping in San Francisco.

“We’re not trying to disengage from China. What we’re trying to do is improve the relationship,” Biden said.
With that, he added that he hopes the meeting will help both sides “reestablish normal communication: being able to pick up the phone and talk in case of a crisis.”
However, Biden warned that the United States is reluctant to invest in China due to Beijing’s trade practices.
“I will not continue to support the position that, if we want to invest in China, we will have to hand over all our commercial secrets,” he said.

It is worth remembering that there were recent negotiations in November 2022 between Xi and Biden in Bali that did not bear fruit, after the United States detected and shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon.
Since then, they have maintained high-level diplomatic contacts to try to reestablish ties.
Asked about Beijing’s expectations for the summit, the Chinese Foreign Ministry was evasive and limited itself to mentioning “in-depth communication” and “important issues about world peace.”
With this, the meeting between Biden and the president of China, Xi Jinping, takes place this Wednesday (15) before a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco.
